in the home

In this work, I am thinking of the moment of innocence before gender is established, the moment of discovery of the penis or one’s lack of the penis.  I have created objects small in size that function as figures, animals, or dolls.  They are photographed within domestic settings, interacting with the space or each other.  Their forms reference the armless shape of a tower more closely than a figure.  Their surfaces are adorned with embroidered images of nipples, which could turn into breasts or pectorals depending on their development.  Their overall shape is phallic.  Depicting them in plushy pinks and reds, or silky blacks give them a layer of sexuality, while at the same time suggesting innocence with their sewn exteriors and doll-like qualities. There are multiple ways in which these objects may become characters and evoke an uncomfortable feeling in the viewer by having to confront sexual issues within these small objects or characters.  The scale does not allow us to think of them in reference to our own bodies, only that of a minor or a small animal, or doll.  The sculptures are shown both as two-dimensional images, only to be seen from an outsider’s point of view, as well as on the floor inundating a gallery space with their quantity.  They occupy both the domestic space as well as the floor in and around the viewer.
